Tuesday's Tune - November 29th, 2011

It was a buddy from work who introduced me to today's band, and I am madly in love. Angus and Julia Stone are a brother - sister duo from Australia. Their style is folk with a bluesy edge, and with  instruments like the cello, harmonica, guitar, trumpet, drums and mandolin, there is no doubt that these siblings are musical geniuses. With both parents as former folk band members and a sister who plays the saxophone, it is safe to say that this family has WAY too much talent under one roof!
Angus & Julia released their debut album "A Book Like This" in September 2007, and today's tune is off that album.

The song that introduced me to the band is called "Big Jet Plane" (off the album "Down the Way" released in 2010), which some of you might remember from various commercials this past year. I really enjoy "Big Jet Plane", as well as several other songs from the duo, such as; "Mango Tree", "Paper Aeroplane" and "Yellow Brick Road". However, I am completely in love with "Just a Boy". I love the lyrics, Angus' voice, and of course one of my favorite instruments, the harmonica.

So here it is, "Just a Boy" by Angus & Julia Stone! Enjoy!

Mel's Meals - Cheesy Baked Mushroom Pork Cutlets

My long time friend Mel recently declared how much she misses my cooking. We used to live together and generally when I live with roommates, I naturally take on the "mother goose" role and cook up a storm for the house hold. I discovered my joy for cooking long before baking came into play. I've always been the type to create recipes rather than follow one out of a book! So to get to the point, Mel asked me if I would help her improve her cooking skills by adding a new recipe weekly, I said why not! This will actually help me document some of my recipes, because I almost never write them down.

So Mel, this week's recipe is an easy one that I've cooked for you I'm sure a handful of times. My mother introduced it to me and I'm 100% positive she didn't come up with it on her own, so I am not claiming any rights to creating this recipe! (for the record.)
Now I know how it is when you get home from work on a Monday night, or any week night for that matter, you're tired, hungry, and probably not in the mood to cook up a feast. This delicious dish is extremely easy and only requires a 15 minute preparation! It's funny as my friends know, I am not a mushroom girl at all, but I am in love with this dish!

Cheesy Baked Mushroom Pork Cutlets

Ingredients:

4 Pork Cutlets
1 Small Onion
1/4 Tsp ground Sage
1 Can low fat Cream of Mushroom Soup
1/2 Cup Cheddar Cheese
2 Cups of Minute rice (or whatever kind you have)
Salt & Pepper

Preheat Oven 350°

Step 1 - In a glass baking dish, place the 4 Pork Cutlets side by side leaving about half to a full inch a part. Sprinkle the cutlets with salt, pepper and the sage.

Step 2 - Dice up 1 small sized onion and leave a side, grate 1/2 cup cheese.

Step 3 - Empty can of soup into a mixing bowl or measuring cup. Add cheese and onion. Stir until all 3 ingredients are mixed together. Pour the sauce over the cutlets, with a spoon or fork make sure you cover all the cutlets evenly.

Step 4 - In a preheated 350° oven, bake for 35 minutes. While pork is baking, prepare rice on stove top or in the microwave.

Step 5 - Remove Pork Cutlets from oven and cover with tin foil for 5-10 minutes.
(By this time, your kitchen will be smelling delicious!)

Step 6 - Serve the Cutlet on a bed of rice, you can choose to slice the pork (which I prefer) and for sauce lovers, with a spoon add as much of the sauce to your plate as you desire.

ENJOY!

Tune back in next week Mel for another recipe, I'm thinking Italian!

Cheers!

Logos

I really enjoy using edible paper because you can really capture the exact image in somebody's head. They can provide a photograph  that they took, or tell you a logo they wish to have. There's really an endless possibility when decorating with edible paper on a cupcake,  this works great when you are trying to theme a party!

I did these cupcakes for a client's father's Air Canada retirement party. I really thought the airplanes were adorable! This was a vanilla cake with vanilla icing & fondant cut outs.

At last...

At last my love as come along, my love being friday! I cannot tell you how excited I am to sleep in tomorrow.
I'm keeping it light today because I had a horrible night and I'm too exhausted to write anything remotely interesting.
Here is a funny and truthful Jenna Marbles video...

Baker's Playlist

In my opinion, running a successful business has a lot to do with organization and time management. I’m all about lists, agendas and making sure my head is in the right spot for upcoming orders.
This week has been a busy one (which is awesome) for Les Gateaux Mignons, with a fundraiser & two orders this weekend I have to make sure things are prepped the days before so that I ensure everything runs smoothly when its go time. (Please keep in mind I run this out of a studio apartment).
Tonight I’m getting my hair done at 5:30 (so excited), so with working my regular 8-4 day job and cupcakes during the nights, my time is limited! It’s true what they say that there’s not enough hours in the day! Having said that a key part to getting my creative juices flowing is my music playlist. Knowing how busy I would be when I leave the office today, I decided to put together a playlist for tonight during my lunch hour! Here is a little preview… I like to choose songs that I can generally sing along to…. (my poor neighbors….)

Roxanne - The Police
Mi Amigo -  Kings of Leon
Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
Suns going to Rise - Citizen Cope
Ahead by a Century - The Tragically Hip
California - Jess Hart
Strange Vine - Delta Spirit
Come Together - The Beatles
Separator - Radiohead
Unknown Brother - The Black Keys
Fools -The Dodos
In Transit - Albert Hammond Jr.
Sweet Disposition - The Temper Tramp
Sinister Kid - The Black Keys

etc....

Scroll down to the post from earlier today for Movember Cake Pop's results!

And it begins...

Well, we woke up to snow this morning, a fair amount of it too, my dog was quite pleased but I can’t really say the same for myself. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love to have some snow over the holidays, its very pretty n all but I’ve developed this strong hate for this time of year. I’m not entirely sure when this hate started, I used to really enjoy sledding, snowboarding, cross country skiing etc, I don’t know what went wrong? Actually come to think about it, I guess this true hate started when I got my license. Driving in this crap is horrible and my work isn’t exactly up the street, it took me a total of 1 hour and 45 mins this morning and that was with what 5-10 cm of snow? Wahhh (yes that was a whine.)
To top it off, before leaving my apartment I grabbed something out of the freezer and one of my favorite kitchen accessories (large ceramic cupcake cookie jar) fell to the ground and shattered L… really upset about that one!

On a lighter note, I made more cake pops last night! Not as many as I would have liked because I ended up burning 2 batches of chocolate… BUT here is the result. I will be adding fondant Moustaches tonight, because these are for a Movember fundraiser that we’re having at my work. So all you Rideau Recognition employees who are reading this, you BETTER be coming out to support!

I'l take more pictures tonight when I finish the full batch and share them with you later this week!

Tuesday's Tune - November 22nd, 2011

Word! So today's tune is from a band called Awolnation. Who you ask? No worries, I will have to brutally honest and say that although this band made it to two albums, it's definitely a one hit wonder. Now I could totally be wrong, but just sayin'!
My cousin introduced this song to me back in March and I enjoyed it then but had completely forgotten about it. It wasn't until my girlfriend was playing it the other month that I realised it was the same song and came to really enjoy it. The name of the song is called "Sail", and from what I got from the video it's about aliens...(I know my thoughts exactly.. but give it a chance!)

I highly suggest you listen to this as loud as you can. There's something about it.... if you're having one of those raging days that we all know so well, pop this track on, kick back and enjoy!

I've got a busy week of baking and cake pop making so be sure to check it out!

Cheers!

Tis the Season!

So after 3 long days with the stomach flu, I'm finally starting to feel better. I won't be eating any poutines (Ive been jonesing for one HARD these past couple of days) but I tested myself with toast & cheese, and so far, so good!

I've realized that I've lost some serious blogging days! Although I didn't get to see it due to being cooped up in my bachelor size apartment, it apparently snowed this week! Because Les Gateaux Mignons requires 2-3 weeks notice for orders, I figured it was time to get into the holiday spirit and share with you some past holiday cupcakes I have done. With cupcakes starting at $3.00 a piece, it would make a perfect gift for friends or family members and a great addition for your holiday luncheons at work!

Now keep in mind these were just a few of last year's designs. There's really an endless possibility for decor, so if you have sketches you wish to use, please email them to kbrecknock12@gmail.com.  I have more holiday cupcakes that I will be working on shortly, so I will share them with you once finished!

Have a good one!
Cheers!

Tuesday's Tune -November 15th, 2011

Today we are going way back...nothing wrong with the oldies in my opinion! I actually find that most older tunes are better than half the stuff we hear these days. Today's track is one by the legendary band Fleetwood Mac.
The band formed in 1967 in London and consists of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks.

I grew up listening to their music and I have to say that the album "Rumors" (released in 1977), was my favorite. Famous for the song "Dreams", and "You can go your own way", "Rumors" won the Grammy award for Album of the Year for 1977. What I loved about this album was the story it told about the relationships that were going on within the band. After a divorce and breakup, mixed with high consumptions of drugs and alcohol, you could really feel what they were going through. My favorite song off the album is called "Never going back again". It's said that Lindsey Buckingham wrote the song after a fling with a New England women and that the song is about "the illusion of thinking that sadness will never occur again once feeling content with life". I really like that.

Mini Me

I'll have to be honest, as Ironic as it is, I'm actually not a huge cake fan. It's not that I don't find it delicious, but rather that I enjoy it in small quantities because I find it can be heavy and sweet. These Mini Cupcakes work perfect for me, and my diet.
Cupcake minis, I'd say it is about 1/4 to 1/2 of a regular size cupcake. As if the Cupcake could get any cuter,  someone invented the "mini" and they are super adorable!

These were Mini Cupcakes I did for my girlfriend this past October. They're French vanilla cake with vanilla icing and a fondant flower for decor.

Les Gateaux Mignons' Mini Cupcakes start at $1.50 with a large variety of flavors and decor. We require 2-3 weeks in advance for orders. Please call 514-824-5658 or email Kbrecknock12@gmail.com

Cupcakes from the Weekend!

Sunday, in some ways it's one of the best days of the week and in others its one the worst. Best as in its my lazy putz around kinda day, where I eat garbage and never really leave bed, in other words do nothing. Worst as in its the last day of the weekend and the anxiety for the week starts to set in so instead of enjoying the doing "nothing" feeling I get all worried and anxious. Having said that, I plan on kicking the anxiety by renting a funny movie and just enjoying every minute of doing nothing!
This weekend I did cupcakes for an old friend! She was celebrating her mom and brother's birthday and didn't want something too "masculine" nor too "feminine", so she requested pink & blue cupcakes with polka dots! Here is the result!

The cupcakes are a chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream icing.

Friday!

So it seems to be tradition now, that Friday's posts are dedicated to Jenna Marble's youtube videos! This girl gets me everytime! SO funny!

Today I will post 2 of her videos, the first is called "How to Avoid Talking to People You Don't Want to Talk to".... this is where she introduces, "The face". The second video my girlfriend showed me last night which is the sequel to that one "When the Face Doesn't Work". Hilarious.

Enjoy!

hahaha, too funny!
Happy friday!! Tune into sunday's blog, pictures from this weekend's cupcakes will be up!

Cheers!

Cute things that would make fun gifts!

Ever since my girlfriend told me about Etsy, I find myself browsing all the time! Just like people who write and sing songs, I really appreciate when something is handmade. It shows a form of creative talent and I feel like you can learn a lot about a person through their work.
After hours of browsing, I have found some really cute gift ideas that would guarantee to put a smile on somebody's face!

Here is a Cupcake Candle that is adorable! It would make great a party favor, stocking stuffer or simply a little (Oh theres something else in the gift bag?) filler. You can purchase this through Etsy on SweetlightCandleCo.

So if you're like me and enjoy coconut on your body rather than in your mouth, check out these life like Cupcake Bath Bombs and Bubblebaths! There's something about the smell of coconut that reminds me of the Caribbean! These would work great as a stocking stuffer, and perfect for when you get back from your winter vacation down south to keep the tan moisturized! The Bath Bombs are made by Sherry Hodgson from Moncton, NB, and can be purchased on Etsy under her page; SherrysSuds.

If you're looking to buy local, similar Cupcake Bath Bombs can also be purchased at Vêtements Façade.

My last gift idea for the day is this fake cupcake, it looks like you could literally take a bite out of it, it looks so real! I have been collecting random "desk flare" for years now. For those of you who are wondering what that is, it is basically random objects and figurines. I have a couple California Raisins, Peter from Family guy, a flying pig & a straw bird some random dude made me in Cuba. I can see this cupcake fitting right in. Mostly because it would be hilarious to see the look on peoples faces when they realize its actually fake! This can also be used as a paperweight or the perfect addition to the classic fake "tea party", that little girl in your life is having. These can be purchased on Etsy on Shimrita's page!

I want to shout out to my Russian & European followers, thanks for the love!
Cheers fellow readers!!

The Result...

So last night  I attempted to make "Cake Pops". I would say for my first time it went very well! I decided to go with a classic pink sprinkle for one & with Christmas around the corner I did 2 white chocolate with candy cane crumbles.
Both were my vanilla buttercake with buttercream icing and dipped into white chocolate. One fell apart so I decided it was the perfect time for a taste tester.......delish.
What's great about these cake pops is you can really play around with the toppings! If I had more cake available I would have done a milk chocolate coating with mixed nut sprinkles!.............next time! ;-)

Here is the result!

This a vanilla buttercake with buttercream icing dipped in white chocolate with candy cane chips.

I realise these arent perfect but I have to give myself a pat on the back since its my first attempt!

Happy Hump Day!!!
